How We Collect Data
We use multiple data collection methods in our research, including:
Clinical & Functional Assessments
Our research team uses standardized clinical interviews and cognitive assessments to better understand people's behavior, mood, beliefs, and / or mental health symptoms. Examples of some of these assessments include the C-SSRS and the MINI interviews.
Ecological Momentary Assessment
To capture how thoughts and feelings change in real time, we use Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). Participants can respond to these surveys on their smart phone throughout their day to day life. By collecting longitudinal data in real time, EMA provides insight into experiences that are often missed by interviews and assessments conducted at a single time point.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Through the use of MRI we can take detailed pictures of the brain's structure and activity. We utilize the facilities at the Masonic Institute of the Developing Brain to perform functional and structural MRI scans. We use both task-based and resting state imaging data, with a focus on task-related imaging, which allows us to examine how brain regions respond and communicate.
Electroencephalography (EEG)
We use EEG to capture changes in brain activity with high temporal precision by measuring these fluctuations using sensors placed on the head. Analyzing this activity allows us to understand how the brain processes information related to beliefs and decision-making. Our research concentrates on applications that combine EEG and deep learning to predict and understand risk for psychopathology and self-harm.
